While the selfie has recently made its mark in the world, self-portraiture has been around for ages. More and more photographers and artists who began with the occasional selfie are beginning to experiment with self-portraiture and are looking to take it to the next level.

Instructor Sharon Covert has used self-portraiture as a healing tool and a way of telling her story. This class focuses on self-expression by using various techniques and natural lighting to create and tell your story through dramatic self-portraiture. The lessons you will learn can also be carried over into other styles of portraiture.

Dig deeper and explore your creativity with Sharon as your guide, pushing past experimentation and building your self-portraiture and portraiture techniques through the use of available natural light – all without compositing or using advanced Photoshop techniques.

Whether this is your first time experimenting with self-portraiture or you’ve been looking to take your self-portraits to the next level, this class is designed to help you expand and move beyond the basic selfie so that you can release your personal stories from deep within.

It’s time to wake up your inner creativity and make some art!

Testimonials:

Expressive Self Portraiture with Sharon was a homecoming for me! My work and my creative vision just never seemed to ‘fit’ anywhere. I began doubting the idea that I was even an artist because of it. But this course, actually, before we even officially started this course, was like someone (Sharon) throwing open a door and welcoming me in with a knowing look and a warm hug. I belonged. I was understood. I was encouraged and challenged to not turn away from the soulful work I was being called to do. Sharon is an incredible guide; intuitive, supportive and loving. She taught me that the part I was most afraid to share with the world was actually the most beautiful part of me. I believe she teaches all of her students this. And I believe that this is her gift.

The Expressive Self Portraiture class was an exceptional amalgamation of theory, editing and practice. Already being a fan of Sharon’s photography before signing up for the class I was pleased with how much she allowed us into her world and technique. This class is perfect for gaining confidence both in front of and behind the camera. I explored self portraiture in an uninhibited way that I hadn’t been comfortable with in the past. Sharon’s positive nature and encouraging, kind words really helped me to bring that out in myself. Sharon is a magical photographer and an impeccable teacher and I would happily recommend this class to anyone interested in photography.

Sharon’s class was a sacred place of learning, connecting, and sharing. I’ve sought out these kinds of places in the past, but they have always fell short, until now. Sharon provides a space where you can dig deep within yourself and make beautiful images. She shares her knowledge, expertise, and magic, but even more so, she shares her heart. Whether you haven’t experimented with self-portraits before or you’ve been doing this for years, you will take away more than you imagined from this class.

This class is great!! Sharon takes you step by step into the art of self-portrait. Encourages and guides you into finding an inspirational theme to inspire your images. She gives you the confidence to do it and the technical know how. You will also receive honest feedback from your classmates in a very positive, safe and secure enviornment. I strongly recommend this class for either the novice or more advance student in search of an artistic expression. Thank you Sharon.

This was by far the finest conceptual photography course I’ve followed. Sharon let us into her ‘darkroom’ and showed us her tips and tricks from thinking about a photo, to creating a plan, to shooting the photo, and to editing until the right feeling. I learned so much! So clear, so much information and extras and a such a good teacher! Sharon always felt close. Her responses to my questions and homework were swift with good tips and examples. All my fears (and all my apologies why I couldn’t do this) fell away within the first week and have not come back as they were before. I can handle them more easily. Sharon created a safe, positive space online where everyone has a place. I felt welcome and seen and I enjoyed the contributions and reactions of the other students. I'm very inspired and still bouncing. I want to hold on to this feeling so much. I now know how to engage, investigate and deepen my concepts. And how to play and try, and try again with so much pleasure!

Sharon, thank you immensely for sharing so much! I found this class to be challenging week to week. I do think you did an amazing job in balancing information with challenging our creativity, and building on the previous week with the homework assignments. So for me, by the end, I really got to experience the process from concept to final product. I enjoyed it and wouldn't change a thing! I would recommend this class to beginners looking for knowledge, to a novice looking to sharpen their craft, to someone ready to go public with their art. This class could also offer others an opportunity to dig deep and share emotions through their art or through photographic symbolism.
